Middle Ear Barotraumas in Commercial Aircrew

چکیده
BACKGROUND: Middle ear (ME) barotraumas are the most common condition in aviation medicine, sometimes seriously compromising flight safety. Considering this and ever-increasing amount of commercial aviation, a detailed overview is warranted. METHODS: In survey study, an anonymous, electronic questionnaire was distributed to aircrew three major airlines operating Finland ( N 3799), covering 93% target population (i.e., all Finland, 4083). Primary outcomes were self-reported prevalence, clinical characteristics, health occupational effects ME flight. Secondary adjusted odds ratios (OR) for frequency with respect possible risk factors. RESULTS: Response rate 47% 1789/3799), 85% 1516) having experienced Of those affected, 60% had used medications, 5% undergone surgical procedures, 48% been on sick leave due (40% during last year). Factors associated included high number upper respiratory tract infections [3 URTIs/yr vs. 0 URTIs/yr: OR, 9.02; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.9920.39] poor subjective performance Valsalva (occasionally always successful: 7.84; CI 3.9715.51) Toynbee 9.06; 2.6730.78) maneuvers. CONCLUSION: reported by aircrew. They lead increased need otorhinolaryngology-related sickness absence from duty. Possible factors include URTIs pressure equalization Lindfors OH, Ketola KS, Klockars TK, Leino Sinkkonen ST. Aerosp Med Hum Perform. 2021; 92(3):182189.

Aircrew exposure from cosmic radiation on commercial airline routes.
As a result of the recent recommendations of the ICRP 60, and in anticipation of possible regulation on occupational exposure of Canadian-based aircrew, an extensive study was carried out by the Royal Military College of Canada over a one-year period to measure the cosmic radiation at commercial jet altitudes. A tissue-equivalent proportional counter was used to measure the ambient total dose e...

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the otitis media with effusion (OME) groups that improved when treated with adenoidectomy and Ventilation Tube (VT), to the group of the recurred after surgery and detect the possible role of allergy in OME. Material and Methods: This study was performed on two groups. The Patient group consisted of 38 patients with recurrent OME with allergy an...
متن کاملMethods for estimating radiation doses received by commercial aircrew.
INTRODUCTION Radiation doses received onboard aircraft are monitored in Europe to protect aircrew in accordance with a European Union directive. The French Aviation Authorities have developed a system called SIEVERT, using calculation codes to monitor effective radiation doses. METHODS For the galactic cosmic ray component, a 3-D world map of effective dose rates is computed using available o...
متن کاملMultiple Osteomas in Middle Ear
Since the first description of middle ear osteomas by Thomas in 1964, only few reports were published within the English literatures (Greinwalid et al., 1998; Shimizu et al., 2003; Cho et al., 2005; and Jang et al., 2009), and only one case of the multiple osteomas in middle ear was described by Kim et al., 2006, which arose from the promontory, lateral semicircular canal, and epitympanum. Here...
